Ramsbottom is stone-built and steep. Terraces climb the sides of the Irwell valley in local sandstone and gritstone, roofs are often stone slate, and the wind funnels rain down the valley in a way that keeps the west-facing walls damp for much of the winter. Green staining low on gable walls and moss on the roof slopes are the standard Ramsbottom picture.
Because so much of the town is older stone with soft mortar, we steam clean rather than pressure wash — the joints simply will not survive a lance.
